This is an Illustrated Guide to removing the annoying text, which webring.org has decided (unpopularly) is a really neat idea.

Please note that, for the majority of users, this information and the bug it fixes are no longer relevant. It may, however, still be of use for reference purposes, and to people interesting in the workings of the webring system.

Solutions to some other commonly encountered problems are listed at the foot of this page.

Text Removal

There is strange text above some webring navbars, and in those with previous multiple entries only my webring “box” is showing.

This is a known problem, which Webring.org have fortunately recently provided the means to repair:

Log in to your account in Webring.org via:

http://z.webring.com/cgi-bin/login?login

Clicking the above link will open the log in screen in a separate window, so you can continue to follow these guidelines. I would recommend you resize both windows to the full screen width and half the screen height, and position the new window at the top of your screen with this window underneath before proceeding. Alternatively, you could print out this guide and devote the whole screen area to the log in and subsequent screens.

The Login screen appears as:

Enter your User ID and Password, then click on the “Sign In” button.

The main screen will then appear.

The main screen:

Click on “Account Info” (circled in pink).

This will take you to a new page.

Scroll down to the “Single Navbar” tickbox (circled in pink)
Make sure the box is unchecked.
If you had to uncheck it, scroll down to and click the button at the bottom (boxed in orange). This will take you back to the main page. If you didn’t have to click the bottom button, return to the main page by using “Back” in your Browser.

Back at the main page click on the link in the left-side column “View Web Sites” (boxed in orange).

Extra information will appear on the main screen, as shown here.

Under “My Web Sites in URL Order”, click on the (edit) link (boxed in pink).

Clicking the link will take you to the Global Information Change screen.

Some way down the page, there will be a tickable box (circled in pink) Make sure it is unchecked.

Then press the “change” button (boxed in orange) at the foot of the page.

If you then Sign Out (circled in green) at the top left, the problem should be fixed.

You can check this by waiting for a minute or so, then visiting the page of your site where the webring appears.
The strange text should be gone, and at least one other navbar “box” should show if you are a previous Webring member. If you are not a previous Webring member, don’t worry about it, (it’s the best way in my humble opinion,) and be pleased that the annoying text is now no more.

In some more esoteric configurations with multiple navbars, it is possible The Small Crusaders Webring's box will be stretched, but that's something I'll have to try to fix centrally, and it may not be necessary or desirable to do this.

Other Common Problems

There is a multiple navbar fault here, the misfiring one is at the top. In the screenshot, if you remove the code for that one when you have two, it would be more efficient. If you only have one navbar showing, and that is as the incorrect one, click on the instructions/help area on it, and correction instructions will be displayed.

Don’t worry - you will not lose the ability to view multiple navbars by doing this - duplicate navbars just call the same list twice.
The main help below will enable at least the Webring(s) you have successfully joined to show simultaneously.

The second navbar shown in the screenshot displays two problems; the annoying text above it, and the missing picture within it.

Removal of the annoying text is described in the main section above.

If you find the picture has disappeared, contact The Freedom Campaign immediately (Removing the NOSPAM bit first). This is an internal problem, and would be caused by a problem with whoever is hosting the graphics for us.
